How to Avoid & Beat Influenza - a Naturopathic Approach

This year seems to be a bad flu year. So they say. As one who survived the 2018 influenza, I'm inclined to believe them. About two days after I recorded this video with my flu recommendations, I started feeling bad. I'm here to tell you that even if you do all the right things to protect yourself, there may be times you catch what's going around. Sometimes it's inevitable. Unfortunately. But in looking back at the days before I got the bug, there was one thing I didn't do right. We'll talk about that.

I mentioned most of my recommendations in this video but forgot a couple of things. Here's a recap of my recommendations to build your immune system:
  • Eat a whole-food, plant-pure diet with lots of colorful fruits & veggies. This is the number 1 thing you can do to build your immune system!
  • Hydrate with plenty of raw fruits and veggies as well as pure water (I prefer reverse osmosis).
  • Take 1 tablespoon of ACV (apple cider vinegar) daily. I take mine first thing in the AM in a glass of water - chug-a-lug! There are many health benefits to drinking ACV daily including alkalinizing your body. Make sure & buy the kind with the mother, aka sediment. I prefer Bragg's. If you have any kind of digestive issue, this will most likely cure it. I promise. Even if you have acid reflux.
  • Get plenty of rest - at least 8 hours per night. Rest is a weapon against bugs.
  • Stay away from sugar - it immobilizes your immune system for hours after ingesting it. It makes your immune system "drunk" so it can't protect you when it's under the sugar influence. This is where I dropped the ball. In looking back each time I've gotten sick in the recent years, it's always been after a period where I dropped my guard & ate sugar. So me & sugar have parted ways, for good! OK maybe I'll have a piece of birthday cake on my birthday. But that's it!

Keep these things on hand for when you get something:
  • Oscillococcinum by Boiron - homeopathic remedy that really helps when you begin it early in the process (as soon as symptoms present)
  • Alpha CF - also homeopathic & best the earlier you can take it in the process
  • Homeopathic cough remedy - or a hot toddy at night - 1 shot of whiskey, warm water, fresh lemon juice from 1/2 lemon, and stevia
  • Homeopathic sinus remedy
  • Netty pot or Nasaline - use 1 teaspoon of Kosher salt dissolved in boiling water - allow to cool & use to rinse your sinuses
  • Elderberry products 
The rest of my recommendations are in the video! Since I got the flu a couple of days after making this, I got an opportunity to practice what I preach. I spent 5 days with a fever and never medicated it. Yes, I felt horrible but I knew my body was doing its job. I rested, drank plenty of water and kombucha and allowed my body to heal itself. I used my Nasaline and essential oils as well as some whole-food supplements and I came out stronger than ever! I had major chest congestion and I'm convinced most people would have headed to the doctor. I knew I was supporting my body in the best way possible and stayed put in my pj's.   I'm glad that is over and pray none of you have to deal with it.  But if you do, you have some good recommendations to follow here to support your body!
